How to Bounce back into your Exercise Routine after a Break

So now Easter is over and the chocolate has all nearly been eaten it time to get back on it! Getting back into your exercise routine can be intimidating . You might have lost your drive and motivation and don’t know where to  begin, but dust off your sports bra and trainers and bounce back into your exercise routine with these easy tips:

Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself
Don’t feel guiltily for taking some time out for yourself. We all need some men time now and again.  you do not want to continuously punishing yourself and set such high expectations that you might not ever achieve. This is only going to be detrimental to you.

Take It Slow
Make sure that you start out slow. If in the first week you go to the gym 5 times in 5 days when you haven’t been for 2 weeks your body will go into shock. No matter what the reason for a break. it is important you don’t try to rush back into it. Depending on the type of exercise you are doing you may need to modify it slightly.

For example, if you ran everyday you may need to start off walking, then building up to a jog until your body is ready to start running again. If you focused mainly on resistance sessions, you may need to reduce the amount of weight you were lifting and gradually increase it as you regain your strength. Remember to always warm up, cool down and stretch properly so that you protect your muscles and joints and avoid injury.

Preparation
Going in with a plan is a always a good idea as you set yourself up to exceed rather than fail.

you need to diary how many days a week you want to exercise. If you are in a desk job like me I find a great idea is to buy a desk calendar or add it to you to do list for the day and once you have done your workout cross out each day you complete. This will not only help your self esteem when you complete the workouts, but also make you accountable for your actions if you do not complete them just like normal work. You will also be able to look back and see exactly how many times a month you work out.

Another great tip to prepare yourself for the day ahead is to pack your gym bag the day before. This also work for food to prepare your lunch the day before so you know you are eating the correct things and keeping on track. If you go to the gym in the morning make sure you prepare breakfast as this is the most important meal to start your day properly.
