Volunteer with Heart and Sole (Walk Leaders)

Volunteer Walk Leaders are at the very core of Heart and Sole and are responsible for leading the programme of walks. Walk Leaders are also expected to:

  • attend a free, one-day walk leader training course
  • act as either a front leader, back marker or middle marker on our walks
  • complete and return paperwork for the walks you are involved with
  • encourage and motivate walkers to attend regularly
  • adhere to the health & safety and Safeguarding measures set in place

There are also opportunities to help develop the scheme and be involved in additional events.

How much time do I have to commit to be a Women’s Welcomer or a Heart and Sole walk leader?

We understand that you are volunteering your time, and so only ask that you can lead at least once a month. If you decide you would like to volunteer more frequently, there are opportunities to do so.
Most of our walks last between 30-45 minutes. Walk Leaders need to be at the meeting point 15 minutes prior to the start of the walk to welcome and register walkers as they arrive. You may also need to be available at the end to answer any queries and encourage socialising.
Quarterly Walk Leader meetings are held at the Council’s Civic Offices. The meetings offer the opportunity to meet other Walk Leaders, set the rota for the following months and discuss matters arising. While not compulsory, it would be beneficial for you attend the meetings if possible.

Do I receive any support as a volunteer?

You would be working as part of a team of volunteers and your point of contact is the Women’s Sport and Wellbeing Officer or the Heart and Sole scheme coordinator.

Day to day expenses of volunteering are not covered. If you have any concerns relating to expenses you might incur, please contact the scheme coordinator(s).

Training days

The next volunteer Walk Leader training course date is to be confirmed. If you are interested in attending a course and becoming a Walk Leader for Heart & Sole, please contact the Scheme Coordinator on heartandsole@chelmsford.gov.uk or call 01245 606569.
