Here at woMEn TIME we have a team of experienced volunteers, to help buddy, welcome and lead women to being more confident at our sessions. They are here to help and guide you through the world of woMEn TIME, so read on and meet the volunteers!
I originally volunteered to be a walk leader with Chelmsford City Council ‘ Heart and Sole’ which is an umbrella organisation for the woMEn TIME project. I now mainly lead walks for the woMEn TIME.
Volunteering for me ticks many boxes! I get to exercise in the fresh air. I have a nice chat with the other walkers; familiar faces and new. I have commitment and involvement with the local community. I go home invigorated by physical and mental activity. What’s not to like?!
Having left a busy city environment, I was looking for something different that would be social and keep me fit. I spotted a poster about the women’s walking group meeting at Springfield, plucking up the courage I joined. It was a really positive experience and an introduction into volunteering.
Whilst walking with the group I learnt about the heart and sole walking programme and the need for volunteer walk leaders. This sounded as if it would be just the volunteering opportunity I was looking for.
I attended the training and now support one to three walks a week either leading or back marking. I have met such a wide and diverse group of people on each walk, it is really enjoyable and a great way to keep active.
I initially offered to volunteer as a walk leader for the heart and sole program because I found I had some spare time and wanted to do something worthwhile. To start off I was a little unsure how walks specifically for women could work but soon found that there are some women who are more relaxed walking in a women only group. I find Volunteering for WoMEnTIME very rewarding and it gives me a real boost to see the positive changes in some ladies after they have joined the group. Particularly women living on their own obviously get a lot out of walking with and also socialising with the group. Some women show a noticeable improvement in their physical and mental well being and have the confidence to go out and try other activities.
I feel as a Walk Leader and part of the group we are making a difference and this makes volunteering very enjoyable and I also get a lot out of the experience.
I would highly recommend volunteering to anyone who has some spare time and wants to combine some exercise in fresh air with a social chat over coffee afterwards.
